UN employee dies in WBD motorcycle crash


first_imgFifty-four-year-old Oswald Dey of Good Intent, West Bank Demerara (WBD), who was employed as a United Nations (UN) Operations Officer in Guyana, died on Tuesday evening after his motorcycle collided with a pedestrian at Bellvue, Village.Dey was pronounced dead on arrival to the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH) after he collided with 35-year old Stanleytown WBD resident.According to reports, Dey was heading North in the direction of Vreed-en-HoopDead: Oswald Deywhen he collided with the pedestrian. Police on Wednesday disclosed that the pedestrian was struck from behind and reportedly fell onto the surface of the road, while Dey was thrown from his motorcycle, hitting his head in the process. Both men were promptly picked up by a Police vehicle which was in the area and taken to the hospital where Dey succumbed to his injuries.When Guyana Times visited Dey’s relatives on Wednesday, they were still coming to terms with the sudden loss. His son, Sherwin Dey, is a university student and his plans were completely shattered since he was set to be engaged on Wednesday night.The young man related to this publication that his last conversation with his father was when he told him that he was happy he was getting engaged.His older son, Marvin Dey, an Army officer stationed in Berbice, was especially affected since he last saw his father alive two weeks ago. He said his dad was strict with education, mentored several young men in the community and was devoted to his job at the UN, which he started in 2016.“My father was very loving; he set a great example [and] had our best interest at heart,” Marvin Dey told this publication.He also said that his father completed his Master’s Degree in Business Administration several years ago. Dey was a father of five.Meanwhile, the pedestrian suffered injuries to his right foot as well as his head. Investigations are ongoing.last_img read more
