The building emerges from the rock face defining an edge and creating a gateway, an arrival from the water that emphasizes the boundary between the hectic city environment and the serenity of the lakeside location. The plot is located in the centre of Stará Červená Voda, in the former Sudetenland in the Jeseníky Mountains. The structure of a house with agricultural facilities in the form of a barn and a stable in the back originally stood on the estate. We decided to keep the granite walls of the barn as a memorial to the great stonework of the original inhabitants. However, the detached house, which was lined with mixed masonry of marl and bricks, was already ramshackle and could not be saved. Most of the stones were not taken to a landfill, but they were recycled and used as a filler for gabion fencing.Save this picture!© Lukáš IldžaSave this picture!Plan – First floorSave this picture!© Lukáš IldžaA new wood-building detached house was placed between the original granite walls of the barn. A ventilated gap was preserved between the new and the original building, which was covered from above by plating. The construction of the house was complemented transversely by the construction of a studio / garage. Between the house and the studio, a multifunctional “square” was created, the centre of the entire plot. It is possible to dry clothes or do small do-it-yourself work, grandchildren can play here or the extended family can meet together.Save this picture!Elevation – SouthThanks to this arrangement, the two parts of the garden were connected. The garden is now functionally divided into two parts. The utility part, with raised flower beds at the back, and the residential part, with a terrace and children’s pool in the front. The original varieties of fruit trees are gradually planted on the plot. Step by step, other small buildings are added to the garden, such as a shed for wood and tools, or an oven for bread.Save this picture!© Lukáš IldžaHouse layout: The house is intended for an elderly couple, parents of four already adult children, who have decided to fulfill their dream of living in a house with a garden after a lifetime spent in a concrete high-rise flat. The house has no basement, one floor and an attic. The total built-up area of the house is 66 square meters. The first floor is set for parents. There is an entry foyer, a bathroom, a utility room, a living room with a dining area and a kitchen, and a bedroom. The movement limits of residents in the future are expected, so the whole floor is without any thresholds and the wheelchair for disabled people is able to turn in the bathroom.Save this picture!© Lukáš IldžaA staircase in the entry foyer leads to the residential attic. Here is one large room that serves as a bedroom for visitors, especially for children with grandchildren. As the Ramzová ski area is located nearby, a large attic has also been designed to store skis and other sports equipment. Structure: The beam system made of KVH (solid constructional wood) lumber was assembled with only a minimum of fasteners and the structure was insulated with blown cellulose. To improve the accumulation properties, the perimeter walls were lined with unfired bricks and plastered in the interior with clay plaster.Save this picture!© Lukáš IldžaThe construction is thus diffusely open. Clay plasters have a great ability to absorb air humidity, which is then gradually released. The atmosphere in the interior is therefore very far from the atmosphere of dry air in a concrete high-rise flat. The exterior is clad with charred spruce wood. This method of facade protection originally came from Japan (shou sugi ban).Save this picture!© Lukáš IldžaIn our country, however, it has been used for several centuries mainly as a modification of the underground parts of wooden poles in fencing. The charred surface protects the wood against weather conditions, but also against fungi and microbes. The windows are wooden with insulating triple glazing and are covered with galvanized sheet metal. The roof is made of black folded sheet metal. The dominant feature of the eastern facade is also the exterior stainless-steel chimney.Save this picture!© Lukáš IldžaThe house is complemented from the south by a stone terrace, which is shaded by a textile tarpaulin. Due to the overlap of the original barn walls from the south, but also due to the sliding shading from the east, there is no danger of the building overheating. The building meets low energy standards. Heating is provided by solid fuel stove; electric heating cables serve as a secondary source. The installation of solar panels is planned in the future.Save this picture!© Lukáš IldžaProject gallerySee allShow lessLiving 304 Single-Family Home / estudio arSelected ProjectsWalmer Castle and Gardens Learning Centre and Cafe / Adam Richards ArchitectsSelected Projects Share ShareFacebookTwitterPinterestWhatsappMailOr Clipboard “COPY” Architects: TRI.ŠTRNÁST architekti Area Area of this architecture projectlast_img read more

New minister wants end to mining strike

first_img27 May 2014 New Mineral Resources Minister Ngoako Ramathlodi has appealed for an end to the four-month strike in South Africa’s platinum mining belt. “I appeal to all stakeholders to assist this country to emerge from the crippling strike that is really hurting the economy and individuals involved,” Ramathlodi said after being sworn in to office at the Sefako Makgatho presidential guesthouse in Pretoria on Monday. Mineworkers affiliated to the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) downed tools over wages at Anglo American Platinum (Amplats), Impala Platinum (Implats) and Lonmin mines in January. “Everyone would be keen to see the strike end as quickly as possible,” Ramathlodi said. “It will be my first job tonight, as I will be briefed by my director-general so that I have a sense of what are the issues that are holding the agreement back. “I’m sure we will succeed,” he added. “I am aware that the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration is mediating, and I think we must give them the necessary support. “But, for my ministry, I’ll be meeting the trade unions individually, collectively [and I’ll also] be meeting the mining houses as well as the traditional leaders in the areas that the mines are operating [in].” Ramathlodi was one of 35 new Cabinet ministers who were sworn in to office following President Jacob Zuma’s announcement of his new Cabinet on Sunday evening. He takes over from former minister Susan Shabangu, who has been moved to the Ministry of Women. Source: read more

How to Use Climate Consultant 4

first_imgWith the text for each design guideline in CC4 comes a schematic or drawing of the guideline.Check out CC4 using either sample data weather files or go to EnergyPlus to download the weather file that is closest to your next project. It will either be a pretty good double check on your design or result in some great changes.……………….1 Climate Consultant was developed by the UCLA Energy Design Group and is copyrighted by the Regents of the University of California. Wind Wheel 3-D Chart from Climate Consultant 4 showing patterns of direction, intensity, and duration. The wind wheel can be useful in planning natural ventilation, landscaping, and orientation of entries and tall gables. You can change fields, including month selection, and even a time-lapse expression of all the wind data, at the lower left.Psychrometric Chart This psychrometric chart allows you to select different design strategies and see their relevance based on temperature and relative humidity impact on thermal comfort.I think the psychrometric chart is the most useful chart you can generate with CC4(there is also a great, short tutorial on psychrometric chart basics that you can download here). The blue dots strewn across the chart are all of the hourly temperature/relative humidity data points for one year. The dots inside just the dark blue box meet standard thermal comfort conditions (per ASHRAE Standard 55). So in Buffalo, for example, there are only 281 hours a year when most folks would not need any form of space conditioning; the outside conditions alone would work. The green box shows that the design strategy of fan-forced ventilation cooling would add another 655 hours of thermal comfort in Buffalo. You can work your way through all of the strategies, evaluating their individual and cumulative effects on thermal comfort. And as you go, you can check on prioritized design guidelines that match the strategies you have selected on the psychrometric chart. The first design guideline listed for the psychrometric chart above is #42, recommending the use of ceiling fans.Ceiling Fan Schematiccenter_img For over 2,000 locations across the country, there are hourly weather data files packed with temperature, humidity, and wind information that can be used to better match home designs to the conditions they will face. But to say that all this information is dense and overwhelming is a bit of an understatement. When I teach the Building Envelope course for the Boston Architectural College’s on-line Sustainable Design Certificate program, I always seem to be stringing together a bunch of different web sites for nationwide climate and weather data. But then I came across the free software, Climate Consultant 4 (CC4)1. It’s an amazing tool. It takes all that weather data and serves it up in 17 different charts, all of which are clear and compelling visual expressions of the data. Here are some of my favorites.3-D ChartsNote how the colors categorize ranges of air temperature and how you can use the mouse to rotate the image to think the pattern through from different angles. It’s pretty easy to get a sense of temperature patterns with the data expressed in this 3-D chart. The drop down menu under “Plot” allows you to use the 3-D chart for seven other weather parameters, like relative humidity and wind speed.Wind Wheellast_img read more

Baylor Could be Without Two Defensive Tackles on Saturday

first_imgBaylor could be without two of its defensive tackles on Saturday when it comes calling in Stillwater. Beau Blackshear and Byron Bonds are both doubtful, according to Art Briles.Baylor injury update direct from CAB: DT Beau Blackshear (doubtful), DT Byron Bonds (doubtful).— Tim Griffin (@TimGriffinBig12) November 16, 2015According to Baylor’s depth chart, Blackshear starts and Bonds backs him up. This will be an issue no matter what, but especially if Mike & Mike decide to thump with the pace a little bit. This is what happens when all your big boy games are at the end of the season. Throw Seth Russell, Jimmy Bean, Ryan Simmons and probably Blake Jarwin on that list and you have about 85 percent (for Baylor, less) of what these teams were from a health standpoint just a month ago.If you’re looking for the comments section, it has moved to our forum, The Chamber. AFI hopes for good show in mixed 4x400m relay sans Hima Anas

first_imgNew Delhi: India’s 4x400m mixed relay team can reach the final of the Doha World Championships despite the absence of top quarter-miler Hima Das, deputy chief coach Radhakrishnan Nair said on Thursday. World junior champion Hima was on Wednesday ruled out of the showpiece event beginning on September 27 due to her persistent back injury in a setback to the Indian team which was putting a lot of hope in the newly introduced mixed 4x400m relay event. Also Read – We will push hard for Kabaddi”s inclusion in 2024 Olympics: Rijiju”Not much difference (with the ruling out of Hima). We have to stay positive and still believe that we can reach the finals in mixed 4x400m relay,” Nair said. The top eight finishers in the relay events of the World Championships will automatically qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. India qualified in the World Championships as the 14th ranked team in the mixed 4x400m relay based on its Asian Games gold winning time of 3:15.71. Bahrain team was the original winner but it was stripped of the top spot as one its runners was caught for doping. Also Read – Djokovic to debut against Shapovalov at Shanghai MastersMuhammed Anas, Arokia Rajiv, M R Poovamma and Hima Das ran that race in Jakarta. In Doha, however, neither Hima will be there nor Rajiv, who is also laid low with an injury. Jisna Mathew, Poovamma and VK Vismaya were named along with Jacob Amoj, Anas and Noah Tom Nirmal for the 4x400m mixed relay. Meanwhile in another development, Anas will not run in the individual 400m race as the Athletics Federation of India did not enter his name for the event despite crossing the qualifying mark. He has been entered only for the men’s 4x400m relay and mixed 4x400m relay. The world athletics governing body IAAF on Thursday released the provisional entry list of the athletes, country-wise as well as event-wise, and Anas’ name was there only in the men’s 4x400m and mixed 4x400m relay, and not in the individual 400m race. “We have not entered Anas for individual 400m as we thought he can help the country better in the men’s 4x400m relay and mixed 4x400m relay. We have good chance to do well in the relays, especially in the mixed 4x400m relay,” an AFI source told PTI on the condition of anonymity. Anas, however, said that he did not know that he will not be running in the individual 400m race. “I did not know about that (not running individual 400m). I will have to check with AFI or coaches,” Anas said from his training base in Europe. Anas had crossed the World Championships qualifying mark of 45.30 at the Kladno international meet in the Czech Republic on July 13 by clocking 45.21, while also bettering his own earlier national record (45.24) in the process.last_img read more

Trump lauds IndianAmericans says truly proud to have them as Americans

first_imgHouston: President Donald Trump has praised the contributions of the influential and thriving Indian-American community in the country, saying he was “truly proud” to have them as Americans. President Trump lauded the role of the Indian diaspora in the US at the historic “Howdy, Modi!” event in Houston, Texas, as he addressed a record crowd of over 50,000 Indian-Americans who gathered at the NRG Stadium to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Also Read – Saudi Crown Prince Salman ‘snubbed’ Pak PM Imran, recalled his private jet from US: Report “Prime Minister Modi and I have come to Houston to celebrate everything that unites America and India — our shared dreams and bright futures,” he said on Sunday. Trump said he was attending the event to express his profound gratitude to the nearly 4 million amazing Indian Americans all across the country, who are “thriving, prospering, flourishing and hardworking.” “You enrich our culture. You uphold our values. You uplift our communities. You are truly proud to be Americans and we are proud to have you as Americans. Also Read – Iraq military admits ‘excessive force’ used in deadly protests Trump, calling the gathering a “profoundly historic event,” was greeted with a standing ovation by the crowd. “You (India) have never had a better friend as President as President Donald Trump,” Trump declared as he was loudly cheered. “We thank you, we love you, and I want you to know that my administration is fighting for you each and everyday,” the president, who is eyeing a second term at the White House in 2020, said. It is estimated that there are about 500,000 Indians in the jurisdiction of the Consulate General of India in Houston. The two largest concentrations are in Houston and Dallas and their suburbs which have approximately 150,000 Indians each. Trump pointed out that over the last two years, the unemployment rate among Indian-Americans dropped by nearly 33 1/3rd per cent. The president acknowledged that the Indian-American community was helping to strengthen the country. “Indian Americans are pioneering, groundbreaking medicines save countless lives. They are developing revolutionary technology that is changing the world and they are founding new businesses that provide jobs to thousands to our fellow citizens. Trump said along with Prime Minister Modi, he was looking forward to working with the Indian-American community to make the two countries even more prosperous than ever before. He noted that Indian companies employed tens of thousands of Americans across a range of industries in the US. Trump said his administration believes that it was “our first duty is ‘we must always be there for the American people’ whether it is African Americans, Hispanic-Americans or Indian-Americans. “We are going to take care of our citizens first, we are going to care of our Indian-Americans before we take care of illegal immigrants who want to pour into our country,” the president said. “America has always been a nation of pioneers and patriots, risk-takers and free thinkers and dedicated workers who have honed their trade, mastered their field, and teach their children to always give their very, very best. “Everyday, Indian-Americans help write this story of American greatness and everyone here today has a crucial part to play in building an even grander and greater American and Indian future. Houston is one of the most ethnically diverse cites in the US and according to media reports, oil-rich Texas is a must-win state for President Trump in the elections next year. On his part, Prime Minister Modi too gave tacit support for Trump’s 2020 re-election bid, saying ‘Abki Baar, Trump Sarkar”. “We in India have connected well with President Trump. The words of candidate Trump – Abki Baar Trump Sarkar rang loud and clear and his celebration in the White House lit up millions of faces with joy and appreciation,” Modi said. Modi’s pitch could help Trump in winning votes of the nearly four million Indian-Americans who have traditionally voted for the Democratic Party. “You can feel the strength and depth of human bonds between our two great nations. People are at the heart of all relationships from Houston to Hyderabad, from Boston to Bengaluru, from Chicago to Shimla, from Los Angeles to Ludhiana, from New Jersey to New Delhi,” Modi said. He noted that hundreds of millions were glued to their TV even across the world and they were witnessing history in the making. “Mr. President, you had introduced me to your family in 2017 and today I have the honour to introduce you to my family, over a billion Indians and people of Indian heritage around the globe,” the prime minister said as he introduced the US President at the “Howdy, Modi!” event. Soon after the gala event, an impressed Trump tweeted to say, “The USA loves India!” He described as “incredible” the electric atmosphere at the NRG arena in Houston.last_img read more
