A quantity surveyor downed five drinks before fleeing from Gardai and crashing into a car with five young women in it.James O’Reilly appeared before Letterkenny District Court facing five charges of dangerous driving and endangerment. The court heard O’Reilly, who didn’t even like rallying, had been attending the Donegal International Rally with friends on June 17th last year. The 25-year-old was spotted by Gardai driving his Seat Leon leaving Ballyraine in Letterkenny just after midnight. They followed the car and O’Reilly decided to try and escape. He overtook vehicles at speed, went the wrong way around two roundabouts before colliding head-on with another car on the wrong side of the road. The car, which contained five young ladies, was damaged and at least one of the woman was injured. The charge read that O’Reilly “drove his vehicle at high speed in an aggressive and dangerous manner, overtook vehicles on approach to roundabout, entering roundabout against the flow of traffic and colliding head-on into an oncoming vehicle.”Letterkenny Court.O’Reilly, with an address at Darkley Road in Co Armagh, but who now lives in Monaghan, fled from his car.He tried to escape on foot but Garda Michael Kilcoyne gave chase and eventually caught him and arrested him.O’Reilly failed to provide a specimen of breath when arrested and taken to Letterkenny Garda station.Solicitor for the accused, Mr Frank Dorrian, said his client was a senior quantity surveyor who came from a very respectable family and had ben accompanied to court by his mother.Mr Dorrian said his mother was not an apologist for her son but said he was the eldest of a family of four and that none of the other siblings had been in trouble.Judge Paul Kelly ordered a probation and community service report on O’Reilly. However, he warned “It is clearly a matter which suggests a sentence be given under the circumstances.“However, I note the plea and the fact that he has no previous convictions. I will fully explore all the options but I will not limit myself to those options.”He adjourned the case until December 9th.Quantity surveyor downed five drinks before head-on crash with five women was last modified: September 12th, 2019 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)

New Delhi: Credit card payments to buy fuel at petrol pumps will from October 1 not get a 0.75 per cent discount that state-owned oil companies had introduced more than two-and-a-half years back to promote digital payments. “Dear SBI credit cardholder, as advised by public sector oil marketing companies, the 0.75 per cent cashback on fuel transactions will be discontinued with effect from October 1, 2019,” the country’s largest bank in a text message informed its credit card customers. Also Read – Commercial vehicle sales to remain subdued in current fiscal: IcraThe government had asked Indian Oil Corp (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL) to give a 0.75 per cent discount on card payments for fuel purchases after a widespread cash crunch in late 20016 following demonetisation of 86 per cent of currency notes in circulation. The 0.75 per cent discount of the value of fuel purchases using credit/debit cards and e-wallets was introduced in December 2016 and had continued for more than two-and-a-half years, straining OMCs. Also Read – Ashok Leyland stock tanks over 5 pc as co plans to suspend production for up to 15 daysApart from the cash discounts, the government had also directed OMCs to bear the burden of card payment charges called merchant discount rate (MDR), which is usually paid by the retailer. An industry official said the oil companies have decided to discontinue the discount on all credit card payments from October 1. However, the discount on debit card and other digital modes of payments would continue, he said. The three fuel retailers paid Rs 1,165 crore in e-payment discounts and Rs 266 crore to banks for bearing MDR, totalling Rs 1,431 crore in 2017-18. In 2018-19, the outgo almost touched Rs 2,000 crore. This after the number of digital transactions jumped from 10 per cent in 2016 to over 25 per cent in 2018. To stem their cash outgo, the oil companies in August last year reduced the discount for all fleet customers using loyalty programmes from 0.75 per cent to 0.25 per cent. Officials said discounts on debit cards and other modes of digital payments will continue for now. Beginning December 13, 2016, a discount of 0.75 per cent was offered to those using plastic money to buy petrol and diesel. This discount was given by way of cashback, which has been credited to the buyer’s account within three days of the transaction. The 0.75 per cent discount on payments made using either credit/debit cards, e-wallets or mobile wallets translated into a rebate of about 50 paise a litre on petrol and diesel. Petrol currently costs at Rs 74.13 per litre in Delhi, while a litre of diesel costs Rs 67.07. Exactly a month after the shock demonetisation of old 500 and 1,000 rupee notes, the government had on December 8, 2016, announced a raft of measures, including discounts on online payments for insurance policies, rail tickets and highway toll charges as the government looked to promote digital cash post note ban. At that time it was stated that 4.5 crore consumers buy petrol and diesel worth Rs 1,800 crore daily and in one-month post-demonetisation, digital payments had doubled to 40 per cent. “As a part of these initiatives, to promote cashless transactions Government of India has announced to incentivise petrol/diesel customers transacting at PSU petrol pumps by way of 0.75 per cent discount when a customer uses Debit/Credit Cards, Mobile Wallets and Prepaid Loyalty Cards,” it was announced then. In December 2016, a 10 per cent discount on general insurance products purchased online and 8 per cent on life insurance bought online was announced. Railways passengers were encouraged to go cashless with a 0.5 per cent discount on monthly and seasonal tickets for suburban railway networks. The railways was also to give a 5 per cent discount for services like catering and use of waiting rooms, if purchased digitally. People who paid digitally or used prepaid cards got a 10 per cent discount at toll plazas on highways. Also, a waiver of service tax on the use of credit or debit card for payments up to Rs 2,000 was announced then. A 15 per cent tax was charged on such transactions in December 2016. It wasn’t immediately known if all of these discounts have been since withdrawn. In December 2017, the government announced that it will bear the MDR charges on transactions up to Rs 2,000 made through debit cards, BHIM UPI or Aadhaar-enabled payment systems to promote digital transactions. The merchant discount rate will be borne by the government for two years with effect from January 1, 2018 by reimbursing the same to the banks, it was announced.

She was addressing a gathering on Mayo Road to commemorate Gandhiji’s birth anniversary. “Gandhiji preached us non-violence and we take his messages very seriously. We don’t need anybody to preach us. We would take advice only from those who have credibility. We only choose a person as our national leader who has the calibre to become a national leader. A national leader should be like Gandhiji and Netaji as both of them propagated the message of universal brotherhood. A national leader can never divide people along religious lines and instigate one community against another. To spread religious intolerance cannot be a motive of a national leader,” Banerjee said. New Delhi: Former Union finance minister P Chidambaram’s bail plea in the INX Media corruption case will come up for hearing before the Supreme Court on Friday. The matter has been listed for hearing before a bench of justices R Banumathi and Hrishikesh Roy. The former finance minister on Thursday moved the Supreme Court seeking bail in the INX Media corruption case saying his continuing incarceration is in the “form of punishment” and liberty of an individual cannot be denied on the basis of “anonymous and unverified allegations”. Citing “frail” health, the 74-year-old senior Congress leader has also said that he is not “accustomed” to food given to him in the jail and has lost 4 kg weight in during his judicial custody. Challenging the Delhi High Court’s September 30 verdict rejecting his bail plea, Chidambaram said he had never attempted to approach or influence any witnesses or accused in the case. Also Read – Firms staying closed 10 days a month due to recession, govt doing nothing: Priyanka GandhiThe high court had dismissed his bail plea saying the investigation was at an advanced stage and the possibility of his influencing the witnesses cannot be ruled out. A Delhi court meanwhile extended his judicial custody in the case on Thursday to October 17 In his plea in the apex court, Chidambaram said, “Bail is the rule, jail is the exception. Arrest and custody are a humiliation and social stigma. The prosecution seems to think that prolonged judicial custody is a punishment they can impose on the Petitioner. Courts should frown upon the attempt of the prosecution to use judicial custody as a kind of pre-trial punishment.” Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Chidambaram, mentioned the petition for urgent listing before a bench of justices N V Ramana, Sanjiv Khanna and Krishna Murari. The bench told him that the matter would be placed before Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and he would take a call on its listing. Chidambaram, who was finance minister as well as home minister in the UPA government from 2004 to 2014, was arrested by the CBI from his Jor Bagh residence here on August 21. The CBI had registered an FIR on May 15, 2017, alleging irregularities in the FIPB clearance granted to the INX Media group for receiving overseas funds of Rs 305 crore in 2007 during Chidambaram’s tenure as the finance minister. Thereafter, the ED lodged a money laundering case in this regard in 2017. In his plea in the top court, Chidambaram has said that “conclusive findings” have been rendered by the high court on the basis of documents placed before it in a “sealed envelope” by the CBI, which were neither part of the record nor shown to him, and he was not given an opportunity to rebut the same. He said that high court has “erred” in dismissing his bail plea on a mere apprehension that he might influence the witnesses, without any supporting material, and on the basis of unverified allegations that do not allege or point anything against him. He also denied the high court’s finding that INX Media’s former promoters Indrani and Peter Mukherjea had met him and “illegal gratification” was paid. “At the outset, firstly, the petitioner (Chidambaram) denies having approached or influenced any witness or accused or even made an attempt to do so, directly or indirectly,” he said. “Secondly, it appears that the above finding (of the high court) is based on alleged statements made by two alleged accused persons and hence can never be read against the petitioner (co-accused) and can in law never tantamount to influencing a witness,” he said in his plea. Chidambaram has further said that case does not relate to “economic offence” and there is no loss to public exchequer.
