Senior Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar moved up a rung to third while VVS Laxman rose four positions to achieve a career-best eighth in the latest ICC Test Rankings released on Wednesday. The 37-year-old Tendulkar scored 98 and 38 runs in the first Test against Australia in Mohali which India won by one-wicket on Tuesday. As a result, he improved his ranking by one place which puts him in third position in the list which is headed by Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara with India opener Virender Sehwag in second place.Tendulkar’s third position is his highest ranking since the Hamilton Test against New Zealand in December 2002.He now trails Sehwag by 13 ratings points and another solid performance with the bat in the second Test, which starts in Bangalore from October 9, could potentially put him in second place for the first time since October 2002.Also on the charge was VVS Laxman whose unbeaten 73 proved to be the cornerstone of India’s thrilling victory.Interestingly, Laxman in the past has peaked thrice in 2001, 2003 and 2007 – all against Australia.Rahul Dravid has moved up one place to 22nd spot but Gautam Gambhir and Mahendra Singh Dhoni have fallen to 16th and 37th positions, respectively.Australia opener Shane Watson, who scored 126 and 56, has also made a big impact on the rankings as he has vaulted nine places to claim a career-best 30th position. The news is not very good for the other Australia batsmen as Michael Clarke, Simon Katich, Ricky Ponting, Michael Hussey and Marcus North have all slipped in the latest rankings.advertisementClarke has fallen five places to share eighth spot with Laxman, Katich has dropped three places to 12th spot, Ponting has slipped two places to 19th position, Hussey shares 28th position with Ramnaresh Sarwan of the West Indies after falling six places while North now sits in 52nd after dropping five places. In the ICC Player Rankings for Test bowlers, pacers Zaheer Khan of India and Australia’s pair of Doug Bollinger and Ben Hilfenhaus have achieved career-best rankings.Zaheer, who was declared man of the match for his eight wickets, has moved into fifth position, while Bollinger’s five wickets in the Mohali Test has helped him rise to eighth spot and Hilfenhaus is in the top 20 for the first time in 20th position.Mitchell Johnson is also on the move and his five wickets have lifted him two places to fourth position.Dale Steyn leads the bowling table with England off-spinner Graeme Swann in second spot.In the ICC Player Rankings for Test all-rounders, Watson has moved up by two places and now sits just outside the top five in sixth spot. The list is headed by Jacques Kallis of South Africa with New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori in second place.
The Indian equestrian team’s participation in the Asian Games looks in serious doubt as, with just days to go for the dressage event to begin, it is yet to leave for Guangzhou. After Mail Today broke the story about rider Rajesh Pattu’s horse Gabbar being diagnosed with tick fever and another horse testing positive for dope while in quarantine in Bangalore, the Equestrian Federation of India (EFI) has time-and-again reiterated that things are under control, while also putting back the team’s departure several times. The last target was November 6, which has come and gone, with the team still being in the country as of Monday night.Normally, equestrian teams arrive in the host city at least two weeks before the competition to help the riders and horses acclimatise to the conditions and prepare. But in this case, the first events — the dressage team and individual qualifiers — are supposed to be held this Sunday. And yet, there seems to be no confirmation forthcoming on when the team will actually fly out, given the fact that transporting horses is a cumbersome process that requires a lot of planning.Mail Today has now learnt that the reason for these delays is that the Chinese veterinary experts, examining the quarantine procedures followed in Bangalore, have refused to give the go-ahead to the team. It may be recalled that the rider at the centre of the controversy, JS Ahluwalia, had told a national daily some days ago that the Chinese were actually extremely happy with the quarantine. Ahluwalia, who is drawing a pension from the sports ministry for being a ‘retired’ sportsperson, is the coach of the eventing team and a competitor in the dressage event and had claimed all the horses were healthy and had been cleared.advertisementHowever, the reality is that the experts now want a detailed analysis of the tests to be conducted in Australia. Pending the reports of these, they still may or may not clear the Indian team for participation in Guangzhou. So, Ahluwalia’s claim that all was well and that India were in with a shot of winning two gold medals may not even get a chance to be proved right or wrong. The politics behind-the-scenes at the EFI and the subsequent cover-ups that have taken place have seriously jeopardised the country’s prospects in the sport. India had won a bronze medal in team eventing at the Doha Asiad four years ago but, in Guangzhou this time around, there may be no Indian representation.
It turned out to be a sweet ‘homecoming’ for Gautam Gambhir as Kolkata comprehensively beat Delhi by 17 runs to notch up their fourth win in the IPL match at Ferozeshah Kotla Stadium in New Delhi on Thursday. Score | PhotosPut into bat, Manoj Tiwary’s gutsy half century helped KKR post a modest 148/7 and then their bowlers got the dangerous Virender Sehwag and David Warner within the first seven overs to restrict the home to 131 for nine. The win took KKR to eight points while Delhi stay put on four following their fifth loss and their road to recovery from here looks pretty bleak. Not only it was satisfying for Gambhir to earn the bragging rights over best buddy Sehwag but it also brought the smile back in the face of Shah Rukh Khan who enjoyed his first victory in his hometown as he shook a leg with Cheer Girls to the tune of Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo Re.The Daredevils this season are highly dependent on Virender Sehwag-David Warner combination. While Warner dragged one from Balaji that shaped in slightly onto his stumps, Sehwag (34, 23 balls, 5×4, 1×6) was in a punishing mood as he hit a flurry of boundaries in the first five overs. It was young Jaidev Unadkat who got the dangerous Delhi captain with a short ball that hurried onto him as he went for a pull and Balaji, who was standing at deep fine leg, didn’t make any mistake.Sehwag’s dismissal literally put the brakes on scoring as all the KKR bowlers did a splendid job during the middle overs.advertisementJames Hopes (25, 30 balls) simply didn’t get going which led to additional pressure on other batsmen who perished going for big shots. Iqbal Abdulla was the pick of the KKR bowlers scalping three wickets for 25.Earlier, Tiwary scored 61 off only 47 balls (2×4, 3×6) as the other KKR batsmen failed to provide substantial support to the Bengal captain.Apart from Shreevats Goswami, who scored 22, none of the other top-order KKR batsmen crossed the 20-run mark. For Tiwary, who has got some good scores in this tournament so far, this was one innings where he shouldered a lot of responsibility staying till the end.If one took Tiwary’s contribution out, KKR’s scorecard would have cut a sorry picture after being put into bat by Daredevils captain Sehwag. .Irfan Pathan (1/16), for the first time in the tournament, looked incisive while young Umesh Yadav (2/29) was a revelation with the ball.Sent into bat, KKR batsmen found the going tough as Irfan was swinging in the ball and Kallis couldn’t keep a flick down which David Warner spilled at mid-wicket.His partner Goswami, who got his first game in the tournament, played some flashy shots and missed a few in between. A slash over third man, a cut over point and a thumping lofted hit that cannoned to the boundary were all hit off Morne Morkel (1/42), who turned out to be the most expensive among Delhi bowlers.Kallis, who started off with a few singles, then tried to break the shackles hitting Morkel for a couple of boundaries. But Irfan finally was rewarded for bowling a good line as Kallis (11) shuffled a bit too much and the ball swung enough to clip the leg stump.Skipper Gambhir started with a square cut off Yadav and was then lucky to survive as he mistimed a pull-shot which Irfan, running backwards, failed to latch on.But Goswami (22, 20 balls, 4×4) didn’t last long as Ajit Agarkar dismissed him with the very first ball of his spell. It was a fullish delivery outside the off-stump which Goswami wanted to steer but only managed to edge it to Naman Ojha behind the stumps.Tiwary started off with a boundary as he opened the face of the bat to guide it to third man where Irfan’s bloomer saw the ball cross the ropes. It was the 11th over of the innings bowled by Agarkar that cost Delhi 15 runs with 14 being scored by Tiwary. A full toss on the legs was gleefully dispatched over the square leg fence. However Hopes made amends in the very next over when Gambhir (18, 19 balls, 2×4) in his bid to step up the run-rate was caught at the deep mid-wicket by Y Venugopal Rao.There was no stopping Tiwary though as he hit Morkel over deep mid-wicket for a huge six. When Yadav came for his second spell, Tiwary clobbered the pacer over long-on for his third six. However, Yusuf Pathan’s (5, 8 balls) flop-show continued as his tired looking hoick was easily lapped by brother Irfan stationed at long-on off Yadav.advertisementKKR’s debatable selection Eoin Morgan (0) was the next to go as his aerial shot was gobbled up by Ojha to put Yadav on a hat-trick.Tiwary finally completed his well deserved half century off 37 balls with a couple of Yadav.-With PTI inputs
